Fibre Mash for Horses: From Minis to Prix St Georges

Fibre Foundation

When it comes to feeding horses, I believe keeping it simple is best. At the heart of every good diet is fibre, the one thing no horse can do without. Fibre isn’t just a filler; it’s the foundation. Just like humans need fibre for healthy digestion, horses rely on it even more. Their whole digestive system depends on a steady flow of fibre to keep things balanced, calm, and healthy.

Whether it’s the damp chill of a UK winter or the dry heat of Dubai, I’ve found that feeding a soaked fibre mash really makes a difference. It keeps my horses hydrated, supports gut health, and helps them feel comfortable and content all year round.

Why Fibre Mash Works for Every Horse

For my horses, I find soaking high fibre cubes or pellets into a soft, hydrating mash creates a feed that is easy to chew, gentle on the stomach and surprisingly versatile. It works for every horse in my yard, no matter their age, workload or temperament.

Romeo (left), who hacks and trains at Prix St Georges level in dressage, thrives on mash for steady energy and digestive comfort.

Diablo (right), working towards Prix St Georges, stays focused and settled because fibre provides slow, calm energy.

Dallas, my young horse, is learning, growing, and hacking happily with a fibre mash as the base of his diet.

And my mini ponies? They’re loving life, and loving their fibre every bit as much as the big horses!

How I Feed Fibre Mash to My Horses

  • Soak well: Add warm or cool water and leave for 10–15 minutes until soft. This ensures the fibre mash is fully hydrated and gentle on the stomach. Never feed it dry.

  • Feed little and often: Smaller feeds through the day mimic natural grazing, keeping the gut active and supporting healthy digestion.

  • Use it as the base: A soaked mash makes the perfect foundation for adding balancers, vitamins or supplements so everything mixes evenly.

  • Adjust the texture: In winter make it warm and comforting; in summer serve it cool and sloppy for extra hydration.

Putting Fibre First in My Horses’ Feeding Routine

After years of working with horses at every level, I’ve learned that the best feeding plans don’t have to be complicated. Every horse, from my minis to those training at Prix St Georges, benefits from a good fibre mash. It’s natural, gentle and supports health from the inside out.

Fibre really is the foundation, simple, essential and the one thing every horse can thrive on.
